Trifle

Line a large bowl (preferably glass so that you get a nice effect)
along the sides and in the bottom with lady fingers or sponge cakes
(those commercial ones with jam in them are nice just cut them
in two and face them jam side out). Add a drained can of fruit
salad to the bowl, reserving the juice. Make Jello (strawberry or
raspberry are good) according to directions, using the juice from
the fruit salad as part of the liquid. Chill until Jello sets. Mum
usually does this overnight. Make custard (mum uses Bird's) with
3 Tbsp custard powder, 3 Tbsp sugar and 2 cups milk. (This is much
thicker than the directions suggest.) Add warm custard to the bowl.
Chill in refrigerator to set. Serve with whipped cream.

Some people like to sprinkle some sherry on the lady fingers/sponge
cake before adding the fruit. The amount depends on your taste.
